Hello, everyone! My name is Takuya Ikeda. I will introduce an famous museum. Gruggenheim Museum Bilbao is located in Bilbao, Spain and deals with modern art. It opened on October 18th, 1997 and Bilbao flourished to the main city thanks to this museum. Frank Gehry made the most of technological advance. Therefore, he succeeded to expand the limitation of modern architecture. He created smooth curve of this building and irregular design by using plan support device.
He designed the shape of this museum like a ship which voyages smoothly, because Bilbao is important which supports fishing. I think it is great that he tried to harmony this museum with
the city despite of this strange shape. I think it is important for buildings to harmony with the city.
By the way, this museum is made of titanium, so visitors will feel cold toward this museum.
However, the theme of this museum is "water". From this point, I think Frank Gehry may be very
glad for visitors to feel good.

it seems that Gehery is good at meeting the mission or purpose of the building. The reason I think so is that the museum I searched also match the mission of the museum.
ReplyDeleteI surprised at the nature of titanium. After all Gehry is not only an artist but also a great architect.

It is clear that the shape is ship!!! I feel his sense of fun. Did you notice a statue besides the building? It seems a spider. It is also unique.

I think it is very interesting point that Gehry designed this museum like a ship because of the characteristic of the place
ReplyDeleteI think he designs from not only his artistic view but also local view by reading your blog.

When I first saw this building, I thought it looked a ship. So, I understood that he designed the shape of this museum like a ship which voyages smoothly, because Bilbao is important which supports fishing.

Marumi chose same one!! She said it is make like a ship in her writing but I could not see it is like a ship. But I can see it in the picture you chose. I like the picture. That is so cure. As you said, the harmony is really important. And this city could keep the harmony very well I think.

I'm impressed how beautiful curve this is. I've never seen that sophisticated one. By the way, I am curious about the sculpture too Yuna mentioned. There is an almost same one in Roppongi Hills so I'm wondering if there is a relation between two of them.

You said he used "plan support device." What's that? We saw the spiral staircases and the big open windows on the Frank Gehry DVD in class and heard an artist saying that he was proud to have his work exhibited in that museum because of the design of the building. Therefore, it must be a pleasure for both artists and visitors. I am interested in visiting that museum if I ever visit Spain.
