Hello, everyone. I'm Marumi. I’d like to introduce Frank Gehry’s beautiful building. This is the photo.
The reason I chose this building was it is very beautiful especially at night. As you see in the photo, the reflection on the river with the moon light is amazing.Could you guess what is it used for?
I thought it would be a theatre. Actually, it is a museum called Guggenheim Museum.
Guggenheim Museum was built in 1997 in Bilboa which is located in the north of Spain. The museum is built alongside the Nervion River, which runs through the city of Bilbao to the Atlantic Coast.
The building itself is admired as one of the most important works in the 2010 World Architecture Survey. It has lots of curves, which let the light to come in the museum. The design is intended to look like a ship along the river. Titan panels are used in its walls, which resemble fish scales. When Gehry designed the architecture, he used computer simulations. In earlier eras, it was thought to be impossible to construct the building as Gehry’s. However computer simulations greatly helped the construction feasible. In addition, although the architecture looks unique when you see it from the river, it looks quite simple from the street. By the design, Gehry did not destroy the traditional surroundings.
The museum is made up of three floors and has nineteen gallaries. The exhibitions are modern and contemporary art of Spanish and international artists. It also holds an auditorium, a restaurant, a library, gift shop. Besides the museum, there is the sculpture of Puppy built by Jeff Koons. He is an American architect and built it in 1992. It can be considered that Gehry built the museum intentionally next to the Puppy. This is the Puppy by Jeff Koons.
The city of Bilbao expected the museum to be revitalization. It was successful and as soon as it opened, it became a global tourist attraction. The museum has a benefit for artists, tourists, and the city.
My opinionI think this museum is very beautiful. Among some of his works, I found this museum is the most attractive. The photo taken at night is especially wonderful. Moreover, it is considerate of Gehry that he designed the museum without spoiling the surrounding’s atmosphere. I was realised that architects should have lots of things to consider such as cost, time, and surrounding. In addition, it is a good point that the city has a benefit by the architecture. Tourism sometimes causes problems like littering, so it is important that local citizens have some benefit. I'd like to go to this museum someday!
This is the website of Guggenheim Museum:

Hi this is yuna. Beautiful !!!!!! I like it !! Even if I looked at it on the photo, I think it is not real. You said he designed the museum without spoiling the surrounding’s atmosphere. I think it is one of his good abilities. Maybe he must have been kind so he could make beautiful buildings like this. He didn’t break nature. On the contrary he designed buildings with thinking about nature around it. He is soooo awesome!!
ReplyDeleteI like your point. I mean you regard the match with architecture and surroundings as important, and I'm for that opinion. We should evaluate an architecture including a view around the one, not only the building itself. As far as I look at this picture,it is 100 percent sure that Frank Gehry considered that point.

ReplyDeleteI like your choice. Bilbao is the place where French and Spanish cultures are mixed up and foams a different culture (Bilbao is in Basque area) compared to other Spanish areas, so I would like to visit in the near future too.
ReplyDeleteI thought Gehry's idea of buliding an architecture harmonized in the atmosphere is outstanding. The same thing can be said in our country. There is a law that the building has to harmonize with the atmoshphere. I hope building like these will increase. This is an URL of Lawson in Kyoto.

I’m Narumi.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your idea that architecture should not spoil the surrounding’s-atmosphere.
Most of the Gehry’s architectures are very unique and… may be eccentric.
But still his building matches the neighborhood. That makes me understand his professional skill.

It's very beautiful. Surely, Frank Gehry designed some works without spoiling the surrounding. So, this museum' s photo looks awesome with out door lamps or the water. And, though this puppy is a image and not useful, I think that this image also makes surrounding's atomosphere.

It's so nice of you to choose this building!! I love this one so much!! I love the reflection too. It is just so beautiful. What I love most in your writing was the puppy though. As you said, I think it was not easy not to spoil the surrouding's atmosphere. But this building is not spoiling them because of Frank Gehry. We can see how he is great architecture from this building too. You wrote very well. It was very easy to understand.

It really does look like a ship, and a graceful one at that, floating on the water. The reflection in the water is magnificent. I think that Gehry had some interest in fish since he has used that motif in many of his buildings, it seems. Also some sketches of fish were featured on the Frank Gehry documentary which I showed you in class. Very interesting!
